The announcement was made by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on November 3, following a state Cabinet meeting. Under the proposed arrangement, the Central Government will hold a 51 per cent stake in the joint venture company, while the Assam Government will retain the remaining 49 per cent.
According to the announcement, the five proposed ropeway projects include:
- Kamakhya Railway Station to Kamakhya Temple – 1.43 km.
- Khanapara to Guwahati Railway Station – 11 km.
- Ganganagar Part-VII to Bhuban Pahar Mahadev Temple – Barak Valley.
- Jatinga Bird Watching Tower to Hempeupet Peak – 3.50 km, Dima Hasao.
- Agnigarh Hill to Bhairabi Temple – 1.80 km, Sonitpur.
The proposed Jatinga–Hempeupet ropeway is particularly significant for Dima Hasao, which is known for its scenic landscapes, hills and tourism potential. The project is expected to improve accessibility to important tourist destinations and create new opportunities for tourism-related businesses and local employment.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen Assam's tourism infrastructure by improving connectivity to important religious, cultural and tourist destinations across the state.
According to the Chief Minister's announcement, the Kamakhya Railway Station-to-Kamakhya Temple project has made considerable progress, while the remaining four projects are currently at the pre-Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage.
If implemented successfully, the proposed Jatinga–Hempeupet ropeway could become an important tourism attraction for Dima Hasao, bringing greater visibility to the district's natural beauty and contributing to its economic development.
